Watch Live Football on United Airlines via Starlink

United Airlines is bringing live professional and college football to seatback screens using Starlink satellite internet through a new DISH partnership.

The partnership will bring live sports directly to the seatback screens of select United aircraft via Starlink’s satellite network. Through a new deal with DISH, United Airlines is broadcasting live professional and college football games on select domestic flights.

Most in-flight Wi-Fi relies on geostationary (GEO) satellites. These satellites orbit at high altitudes, which causes high latency and limited bandwidth. This distance makes live video streaming difficult. Starlink uses a low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite network. The closer proximity to Earth provides higher speeds and lower latency. This allows passengers to watch live games without the constant buffering found on older connections.

Availability and Fleet Rollout

United is installing Starlink hardware on its aircraft through an ongoing rollout. The service is not available on every plane in the fleet. Passengers should check their specific flight details in the United app to confirm if their aircraft supports live streaming before they travel. This is important for travelers flying into major hubs like Chicago O’Hare (ORD).

MileagePlus and Passenger Access

The live sports broadcast is available to all passengers on supported flights. It does not require a specific MileagePlus tier. While members of the Star Alliance network have access to various global benefits, this content is a standard feature for anyone on a supported aircraft. This differentiates United from some low-cost carriers that charge for all connectivity. While Delta Air Lines is also investing in improved connectivity, United’s partnership with DISH specifically targets live sports content.

Traveler Tips

If you plan to watch a specific game, do not assume your flight has the technology. Check the aircraft type in the United app. If the plane does not have Starlink-enabled seatback screens, you cannot stream the game. You can use the United app to check your flight details or look for alternative flights with specific aircraft equipment.
